Narwal Freo X Ultra

A top-rated and highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that takes a fresh approach to design The Freo X Ultra is a very well-built machine. The $1,400 list price is difficult to swallow however, you can find it on sale often enough to make the purchase palatable. The unit looks fantastic, and the base takes up very small space in the corner of your home.

The design of this robot addresses a few problems that we've encountered with other robotic vacuum and mop units, such as the brushes getting caught in hair, and the brush being unable to reach floors that are not covered by furniture. The sweeping performance is also impressive on carpets as well as bare flooring. The vacuum/mop system is equipped with a high amount of debris collection, and the mop can saturate bare floors quickly.

The mops have a sophisticated system that cleans along the edges of walls and around furniture. The robot is able to avoid the bulkier obstacles like toys, food bowls, backpacks, and shoes without any problem. But it can get stuck or become entangled with smaller and more compact objects, such as shoelaces USB cables, and pens.

We used this robot to clean and mop a mix of pile carpet tiles, FLOR rugs and hardwood floors within an open, large floor layout. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped a 90m2 area in just 170 minutes, which is close to the average for Gen 4.

The robot is distinguished by its numerous features. Freo X Ultra is equipped with a number of improvements in software, sensors and hardware that keep it on top of its class. It claims 3.5 hours of autonomy in environments up 260m2.

Freo's app lets you modify various functions, such as how often the robot comes back to the base station. You can also alter the frequency of mopping, the power level (silent, intelligent), or the mopping humidity. The app is able to detect areas that are heavily soiled and design a clean route, and give detergent out or raise the pads on carpet.

Other noteworthy features include a rapid charging battery, a clear display on the robot's bottom and a practical dock door that opens easily. The Freo X Ultra is the ideal vacuum and mop for home and apartment owners who want to make a difference in their chores while keeping their homes clean and tidy.

Miele Scout RX3

Miele isn't a joke in the world of robotic vacuuming and has a reputation for quality and technological innovation. This new model is designed to take cleaning performance to a new level with its advanced features.

The RX3 comes with dual suction and intelligent navigation that includes 3D mapping, and a camera that sends live images to your smartphone for easy control. The RX3's robust four-stage system provides excellent dust collection on carpets and hard floors. Swing-out side brushes with dual suction channels, and intuitive controls clean corners. Its 8.5 cm height lets it get under furniture with low levels. Front cameras and infrared sensor help it navigate barriers, thresholds and obstructions with ease.

The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test on how well it was able to clean baking powder from baseboards and corners. Its 2,500Pa of suction was a bit weaker than some other robots, but it moved quickly and was extremely quiet. It didn't mop, however its washable pads were a bit difficult to attach and could not deal with dried-on dirt.

Its app is a little basic and lacks features such as multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It does work with Alexa, but its voice controls aren't precise or responsive. It's also a little erratic when it comes back to the charging station after an exercise. Other robots can follow the wall or trace a previous route, but the RX3 is a mess until it quits.

Another issue we encountered was with its intelligent features, specifically the mapping function as well as digital keep-out zones. While it did a decent job of keeping away from our shoes and furniture legs however, it was easily hung up by socks and cables, and was unable to handle the tassels that adorn rugs. That's why we chose not to include it on our Best Buy list. Still, with a decent price and a dazzling performance, the Scout RX3 is worth considering if you're looking for a smarter alternative to the traditional uprights.
